My new gardening project involves a flower bed with a willow edging (the cat looks skeptical). It’s going to be mostly wild and obviously bee friendly, while a corner is currently acting as a nursery for some flower seeds I bought last summer at Dunvegan Garden, one of the rare places on Skye where you can actually find mature native trees.
The male mason bees are already out in the cold, fighting each other and waiting impatiently for the females to emerge from the nests. I suspect they don’t even eat. After one full year spent in metamorphosis, they fight, they wait, maybe they drink the rain.
