The Brain

I have never seen Douglas Coupland’s installation The Brain, a huge display of everyday items collected over the years, mostly plastic, sorted by general category and brain side (left vs right), some connected to each other by strings.

I know it exists, I have seen photos, and I used to think it was meant to represent, well, the author’s brain. But recently I discovered that it does not represent what the brain is, instead it represents what the brain does, or better, what the brain likes to do, which is sorting, categorizing, abstracting, and connecting.

Maybe you knew it all along.
