Ilona Szwarc is a photographer based in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Warsaw, her take on American culture is rational and dreamlike at the same time.
I’m intrigued by both her main projects, American Girls and Rodeo Girls. I love how all these girls manage to find themselves, some quietly, though a doll that can only offer a representation of individualism, others actively, reclaiming rodeo for themselves.
I like it that the photographer so clearly understands them.
As a former horsegirl myself, I would have loved for someone to capture the power I felt back then.
